Forward To The Past

Post 53: A Longing for Peace

A New Year wish for January 2024

WHY NOT?

Why cannot we be true Earth people
Standing together, gazing out into the void
Protecting each other’s backs
Accepting our differences,
Acknowledging our similar needs
Not noticing the seams of Nationalist remembrance

With apologies for not starting with that much used mantra ‘a happy new year’. Obviously I do hope for same, but, I cannot, in all honesty, repeat this hypocritical statement.

In 2021 Peggy Seeger released a song ‘How I long for Peace’. It is simple and and true; and says everything that I, and many others, feel the need to express. Why is this world, apparently, so set on war and oppression? Why are world leaders indifferent to the effects of invasion and revenge; causing division, destruction, famine, disaster, homelessness, enforced migration and the multiple deaths of humankind?

I had hoped that the exponentially increasing effects of man made climate change would be a wake up call, that would cause us to change our ways; and start to work together. But, instead, we seem to be rushing, lemming like, over that final cliff. Oligarchs, Kleptocrats, Dictators, Military men and ego crazed power obsessed leaders seem to be gaining the upper hand.

But still, but still, I can’t extinguish that tiny flame of hope; that we will be forced to find a way to work together, for the future of our innocent children; and the saving of our precious planet

We’ve got to keep hoping that somehow we’re coping
As extreme events happen much thicker and faster
Can human invention achieve it’s intention
And, at the last chance, divert coming disaster?

  1. Life is change. The climate has always changed and always will; it is man’s hubris that makes him believe that he can also control the climate. However, he can control the damaging effects of pollution on the ecological system. He can limit man’s demographic pressure on the earth’s natural ressources and try to preserve the planet for future generations.

    1. You are right. Life is change. That is why I have specifically stated ‘man made’ climate change, which has shown a measurable increase since the industrial revolution. My main point however is the man made pollution of war, oppression and power. That we must try to change for the betterment of the millions who suffer the consequences. I don’t know how; but that doesn’t mean we can ignore it. With my optimist hat on, I’m hoping that we will be forced to find ways of working together to unite the human race.

But, no worries! When humans have bombed, starved, drowned and burnt their race of existence, the world will return to a state of nature.

  2. Apparently there are 13 global wars going on at this moment and sadly you’re right. When we’re all bombed and starved out the world itself will be a happy place.
Could there be peace before that happens??
